Our Mission
'On Familiar Things' is a weblog that invites its readers to a discussion with the masters of a simpler art, art that celebrates the worldly and mundane. Professors Jan Peeters and Hermann Wundrum see beauty in the homespun – tables set with fruit and flora, simple scenes of bucolic family matters, quiet parlors – in which they find the engine of everyday life: the soft, persistent beat that drives us heavenward as we cut our bread, nap in the sunlight, or set our tables with seashells and roses.
Jan Peeters
Prof. Jan Peeters is on research leave from the art history department at the University of Utrecht. His new book, The Sacred Kitchen, about domesticity and religious reformation in 17th century Dutch painting, is available from Cambridge University Press. Prof. Peeters is an occasional advisor to Haarlem's Frans Hals Museum.
Hermann Wundrum
Hermann Wundrum is an independent scholar and furniture maker and a former professor of fine arts at the University of Amsterdam. His latest book, Humble Foodstuffs: Sustenance Gardening in 17th Century Netherlandish Painting, is available from Cambridge University Press.
